All About Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is a procedure, in which some of the hair follicles from ‘donor’ area are shuffled to the bald ‘recipient’ area, by surgical procedure. It is autologous transplant or auto (self) grafting, meaning donor hair roots are patient’s own hair roots, from different area.
The hair roots from front and top part of scalp are structurally different from that of roots at sides and back of head. Hair roots from front and top of scalp have receptors (binding site or docking sites) for damaging androgenic hormones. Such receptor structures are absent of back and sides of scalp area hair roots. Hence they are not sensitive to androgenic damage, which is basic cause of Androgenetic Alopecia or Male Pattern Baldness.
This principle makes hair transplant provide practical ‘cure’ from androgenetic alopecia. Native original hair (existing hair) in the recipient area are still sensitive to the androgenic damage and they will eventually fall off without treatment. Hence, though grafted hair do not need medicines, patient often has to take medicines to protect pre-existing hair.
If donor area is inadequate or numbers of grafts required are more, body hair can be utilised. Most commonly used donor body hair roots are from beard, chest.
Depending upon method used for retrieval of donor hair roots, there are two types of Hair Transplant Methods, FUT (Strip Method) and FUE (Follicle Unit Extraction) method. Both these procedures are done under local anaesthesia. In local anaesthesia for these procedures, only donor and recipient area are made numb, while patient stays awake during the procedure.
FUT or strip method is little older, in which a small strip of scalp from back of the head is removed, and hair follicles are separated. They are grafted in the recipient area. It is more invasive method; require stitches, and results in linear scar.
In FUE, individual hair roots are taken out with small punches. It is much less invasive, suture less hair transplant method. There is faster recovery, less bleeding in FUE method. Also resulting scar are very minute, cosmetically acceptable. Drawback is FUE takes longer time.
Regardless of method of hair transplant, hair roots take some time to settle at new place. Derive nourishment for local surrounding and start growing. Perceptible hair growth can be seen in 10-12 weeks (3 months time). Eventually grafted hair roots enter in growing cycle one by one, and final voluminous hair growth is seen in 10-12 months following hair transplant surgery.
