Niche knee surgery heals 70-yr-old man An elderly citizen, who was unable to walk without aids for the last three years, found a fresh lease of life after a unicondylar knee replacement surgery was successfully performed on him a few weeks ago.Hadapsar resident Babanraod Jarad (70) has a completely damaged and severely deformed left knee, said doctors at Noble Hospital, where the procedure took place. However, the unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) conducted on him was able to save all four major ligaments of his knee, while total knee replacement surgeries usually see the loss of two ligaments.UKA is a surgical procedure to relieve arthritis in a knee compartment, during which damaged parts of a knee are replaced. It has minimal post-operative pain and a shorter recovery period than total knee replacement surgeries.Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Rohit R Luthra, head of the department of joint replacement at Noble Hospital, told Mirror, "Jarad was unable to walk and had pain in his left knee for three long years, leaving him unable to do routine work and affected his quality of life. He was on anti-inflammatory painkillers and other medicines for at least two years. The patient suffered from knee osteoarthritis, which also caused severe pain in his right knee. Beyond a certain point (stage II) of these afflictions, medicines, physiotherapy, and other arthroscopic interventions are not useful. Total knee replacement becomes a definitive treatment."Jarad's surgery took place on April 8, and he was discharged rapidly, on April 10. Luthra explained, "The UKA involves less pain and loss of blood, as well as lower costs. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-one of the key ligaments that helps stabilize one's knee joint and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) lost in total knee replacements were saved. Further, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) located on the inner knee and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in the knee joint that connects bone to bone were also saved in the procedure."Speaking to Mirror, Jarad shared, I was in terrible pain for years and constantly on medication. Painkillers became the norm for me, and daily chores a huge burden. Specialists had suggested total knee replacement, but pain and financial conditions prevented me from undergoing this. Today, I am walking with just a stick and could even make open movements with my legs After physiotherapy, I am sure I will be able to live a better life."Explaining why this surgery was special, Dr. Harish Keswani, consultant (orthopedics and joint replacement) at Ruby Hall Clinic, Wanowrie, said, This surgery is basically done on young patients, with a single compartment of the knee involved. Not every patient is eligible for this procedure- it depends on indications, stage and pain levels Unlike total knee replacements, this is more natural and ligaments are preserved. Daily life and routine activities become easier."
